Hiya, I’m Bayo, host of the What a Joke podcast and in case you’re wondering, you are now reading the Whatspodcasting newsletter. A friendly disclaimer before you proceed, continued reading may result in one or more of the following;
Involuntary and unrestrained laughter
Learning new podcasts
Enjoyment
Being offended
And subscribing to What a Joke (you’d better)
And most importantly, always remember, pleeeeeaaaassseeeee, don’t take everything you read on here too seriously 🤡
Before I begin, I’d like to confess… I don’t listen to podcasts
Wait wait wait, put down the pitchforks and torches
What I meant to say was… I don’t listen to A LOT of podcasts. It all started when I was a boy (insert melancholic violin music) when my father would often play the audiobook, ‘Who Stole My Cheese’. I couldn’t tell you what it was about if you ever asked, but I’d say it was my first podcast in memory outside of church tapes, I suppose.
Where am I going with this? Nowhere. I just wanted you less angry. Now, to my favorite podcasts.
First podcast: The Bible Project
I’m Christian.
I dunno why I was expecting some applause but it’s okay, let’s continue. I’m Christian, but not very good at it, so thank God we have the Holy Spirit.
One thing I struggle with is Bible study. My reading culture took a nosedive almost a decade ago and I haven’t really recovered. I tried audio bibles, but it wasn’t as engaging cus the reading felt flat.
Enter… The Bible Project.
It’s basically two guys, one Bible nerd and the other a regular guy (I think) taking a trip through the Bible and looking at it from multiple angles, as a story designed to lead to Jesus. Christian or not, it’s a great way to explore the bible through a somewhat new lens, and kinda just follow the trail. It’s really helped.
Second podcast: Song Exploder
Next up we’ve got another absolute GEM! Have you ever heard a song and wondered ‘How on earth did the artist birth THIS?’ Well, Song Exploder is the answer to that question. Some of your favorite artists break down and blow up some of their most popular tracks. From Glass Animals to Aurora to, yes, even Omah Lay.
It’s recorded asynchronously and it’s another really immersive storytelling journey, just like the previous podcast.
Brief Intermission
I’m a storyteller, I love consuming stories as well, and while I can get very easily distracted, good stories, more often than not, keep my attention
End Intermission
I recently discovered song exploder, and if you’ve ever heard the song RUNAWAY, and liked it, at least check out Aurora’s episode.
Third podcast: The Gospel in Lagos
Coincidentally, we have another Christian podcast here, but the difference is, this is actually a collection of church services from City Church. No, it’s not my church, but I traveled to Ibadan one time and I sat in a sermon led by the senior pastor of City church, who was visiting Sycamore church (also not my church) that Sunday. And he told a story.
I’d never heard the Bible broken down in such an interesting way (this was before The Bible Project), but I was hooked. And after that, I checked out other sermons. I haven’t listened in a while though, but I should. You should too.
Honorable mentions:
EbunTalks Podcast, cus Ebun is cool and she talks sense and heart and I’m super proud of her.
Built To Last, which is a limited podcast by two of my one-time favorite brands (Buffer and Wistia) where they interview other brand owners about building brands that last.
Outro…
So, you’ve made it to the end of this newsletter. Having had a taste of my incredulous humorous prowess…
Plis, abeg, listen to my podcast. You learn a lot of stuff that might never help you in life, but then you also learn stuff like how thousands of men fought and died over a wooden bucket, or that the ‘close door’ button in elevators doesn’t actually work. Aaaaanyhoo, here’s my linktree, so listen, or whatever.
And join the Joker Hub on WhatsApp, which is our community where we… commune. https://chat.whatsapp.com/D21kS7Vtoqw1WBaWagFpDv
Please, not whatever, I care. Tenks and God bless.
Thank you for reading whatspodcasting!
